Casework encompasses a range of support services, such as counselling, community resource referrals, and service integration. Caseworkers initially focus on comprehensively understanding the homeless individuals’ current challenges, spanning interpersonal relationships, medical issues, emotional and psychological well-being, and social engagement (e.g. employment or further education). This assessment also empowers service users to appreciate their situation, values, thoughts, beliefs, and personal strengths. Through collaborative efforts, a plan is developed to re-establish the subjectivity of the service users and enhance their ability to initiate personal transformations and confront future hurdles.
Recovery Centre for People Experiencing Homelessness
The mental health of the homeless population in Hong Kong is in a critical state. According to the 2021 Hong Kong Homeless Survey, a significant proportion of people experiencing homelessness had taken psychiatric medication (25.4%), exhibited symptoms of depression (28.7%), and showed signs of anxiety (26.3%) in the previous six months. A joint study by ImpactHK and Hong Kong Shue Yan University in 2023 found that 44.9% of the homeless population met the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
To address this pressing issue, on 1st June 2024, we launched a three-year rehabilitation programme with support from the HKEX Foundation.
The programme is centred around the principles of “Recovery Model,” and “strengths-based practice” to support comprehensive case management services to our service users. This also includes the intervention of spiritual groups, such as meditation, relaxation, experiential activities, professional counselling and crisis assessment. The goal is to create a calm and comfortable environment that facilitates the recovery of the body, mind, and spirit, so that they can transition into a new stage of their lives with a renewed sense of peace.
